Configuring the Max Links System

Configuration comes in two parts: configuring the system and configuring the categories.

It's actually quite possible to enter the Control Panel with the default configuration. So it's suggested that you familiarize yourself with the Max Links pages and reading about the Control Panel and Creating Page(s), before coming back to configure the system.

System Configuration.

The system configuration is straight-forward. Note, esepcially, the field called Your Links Pages URL. That is where the links pages are, on your website. It's important to know that this is only used in the thank-you email. It isn't actually used as the address to create your links pages. They will always be in a folder called 'links' that is within the folder where you put the Max Links system. However, if you wish to then move them elsewhere on your website (for whatever reason -- it isn't at all necessary) you should put that web page address is the Links Pages URL field in the Configuration.

Links Configuration

Here’s how you configure the links system:

The first few are all relatively straight-forward.

Then comes the field called Your Link Paragraph. This is the your link paragraph that you wish to share with other sites. Typically, it is in the format:

  • Title
  • Description
  • Web Address

Example:

Web Wise Sage Webmaster Services
Web Wise Sage providers Website Services and Add-ons. Real-life solutions to real-life challenges.
www.webwisesage.com

Next on the Configuration page is Thank You Email text.

This is the template for the thank-you email that may be sent whenever you add a link to your links database. It comes pre-defined as follows:

Subject: A message for [NAME]: thank you for the link exchange.

A message for [NAME]: thank you for the link exchange.
I have taken care of this for you.

You can find your link at:
[LINKPAGE]
in the [CATEGORY] category.

Here is our link text:

[LINKTEXT]

Thank you very much.

...[MYNAME]
[MYEMAIL]
[MYURL]

As you can probably tell, the [NAME], [LINKPAGE], etc. markers are filled in, at the time the email is sent. The best way to see this in action is to Add a Link and see what results in the email message that automatically results.

Next on the Configuration page is Email Message sent when Email button is used.

This is similar to the above. You can define a template like the above. It is meant to be used after the links database is filled in. For example, you could choose to Select all the links which were entered after a given date. And send an email to only those webmasters. The most common use of this is to inquire from webmasters who haven't yet supplied you with the page address of where they published your link.

Next on the Configuration page is Header HTML for links pages when created. And Footer HTML for links pages when created

This is the HTML code for the header on each links page. It’s how you get the links to match the appearance of the other pages on your website. (Or create a nice layout for the links, if the appearance is to be different.)

After you've added a number of links, you can create the links pages. A links page will be created for each category. (See categories below.)

Each of the pages to be created will have this header and a footer. In these two fields, you may enter the HTML code for the header and the footer. Note that all href= and all src= html tags must use absolute addressing, i.e., http://something/

Next on the Configuration page is HTML Link Template for Non-Partner Links

This is how you want your links to appear. For example:

<a href="[REALURL]" target="_blank"><font color="#0000FF"><b>[TITLE]</b></font></a>
<p style="margin-top: 0">[DESCRIPTION]<br><br>

[REALURL] is the webpage address of the link, with the http://
[URL] is the webpage address of the link, without the http://
[TITLE] is the title of the links, and
[DESCRIPTION] is the link paragraph.

Note that there can be another link template, the HTML Link Template for Partner Links. A partber link means a link has been published on the reciprocating website. Or another way to say it, you've filled in the Published URL field on the Add Links form. The partner links can be listed at the top of your link pages, whereas the non-partner links get listed at the bottom of the links pages. If the HTML Link Template for Partner Links field is empty, this means that all links will appear together in one alphabetized list on the link pages when created.

Configuring Category Titles

The Max Links system is designed for using categories of links. The object is to end up with a number of links pages, arranged by category.  For example, you could have links catgeorized as:

  • Shopping & Gifts
  • Travel & Vacation
  • Internet & Technology

or as many categories as you wish.  By pressing the Configure Category Titles button on the Configuration page, you come to a screen where you can enter the categories. Next to each category is a field where you can enter the name of the page to be created.  For example, the above categories could have these page names:

  • shopping.htm

  • travel.htm

  • internet.htm
