Back in the Control Panel, when you’re viewing the list of articles you’ve entered, suppose you want to view only certain articles in the list. For example, maybe you want to see only a list of articles that were written by a given Author.  This is the purpose of the Select section. 

By the way, you may never neeed to do a Select. But it's here if you want it.

You can select which articles should appear in the list. When you go to this Select Articles to Show page, you can select by Article Name, Author, Issue, PageName, Abstract, Article text, Image or Date Added.

For example, you can select by "Image is null." That will show you ONLY the Articles that do not have any photos (images) associated with them.

Another example: "Date Added is between" and select 2 dates. That will show you only articles that you added between those dates.

Then, when you hit the Select By Above Criteria button, you're taken back to the listing on the Control Panel.  Only now you see a list of only the articles you selected. Note that if you use Export – Import of Articles, it will only export whatever selection is currently in effect.
